The Nephilim (Giants) Are NOT the Offspring of Fallen Angels!
In this sinful and wicked last days’ generation, a great many folk have ever-itching ears to hear and believe some new false doctrine shed abroad by a great many false prophets, false teachers and idol shepherds (Zechariah 11:17).
And a perennial favorite is the false doctrine that the nephilim (Hebrew), or giants, of Genesis 6 are the offspring of fallen angels and the daughters of men:
Below is the whole of Genesis 6. Please read it carefully before we demonstrate, further below, that the nephilim are NOT the offspring of fallen angels:
And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it. And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die. But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee. And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them. Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.
Most fundamentally, “the sons of God†(Genesis 6:2, 4) are NOT angels, neither fallen nor faithfully serving God.
Throughout God’s holy Word, “the sons of God†refer, exclusively, to all who are saved by God’s grace through faith, from righteous Abel right through to all of the Old Testament saints discussed in Hebrews 11, and of course, right through to the end of time:
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. (Job 1:6)
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. (Job 2:1)
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? (Job 38:7)
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:12)
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (Romans 8:14)
For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. (Romans 8:19)
That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; (Philippians 2:15)
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. (1 John 3:1-2)
So, from the start, we can see that these “sons of God†are not angels, but saved men.
But we can demonstrate the truth of this further via the following verses from Hebrews 1, in which it is shown, explicitly and irrefutably, that angels are not “the sons of Godâ€:
Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? (Hebrews 1:4-14)
Angels cannot be “begottenâ€, because they are God-created beings; and this includes Satan. They are not flesh, but spirit. God created them to minister “for them who shall be heirs of salvation†(Hebrews 1:14), that is for all who will come to God though faith in Jesus Christ:
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. (Romans 8:14-17)
Further, we can see from Jesus’ own words, below, that angels — who, again, are God-created spirit beings — do not procreate, nor do they take wives as do the sons of God in Genesis 6:2:
Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. (Matthew 22:29-30)
But let us put one more final nail into the coffin of this false doctrine:
And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. (Acts 17:26-28)
Amen — let us praise Him continuously, for He is good, and His mercy endureth forever! The above passage makes it irrefutably clear that mankind is of one blood. There are not only no separate races of people on earth, but, further, there is no hybrid race of men sprung from any fallen angels. Period.
All that has been written above demonstrates the lie that the nephilim, or giants, are the offspring of fallen angels. But let’s take it further, still.
Those who teach this false doctrine also state that God flooded the earth as a means to rid the world of this (fictional) hybrid race. But Genesis 6 shows us that this teaching is likewise false. Nowhere in God’s holy Word does He suggest any such thing. On the contrary, God tells us, explicitly, why He did decide to flood the earth, and why He saved Noah and his family:
And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. (Genesis 6:5-9)
Please note that there’s nothing about destroying any hybrid race.
Further, if it were God’s intention to destroy the nephilim, or giants, from this world — and we’ve shown throughout this post that this is a false teaching — then why do giants reappear on the earth well after the flood? Please refer to the following instances: Numbers 13:33; Deuteronomy 2:11, 20; 3:11, 13; Joshua 12:4; 13:12; 15:8; 17:15; 18:16; 2 Samuel 21:16, 18, 20, 22; 1 Chronicles 20:4, 6, 8; plus the account in 1 Samuel 17 in which David slew the giant Goliath.
Let us consider what God is showing us in Genesis 6, a situation which was brought about by godly men taking wives of the daughters of worldly men. God knows what will transpire in such cases, as He later makes perfectly clear to the Israelites in the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy, and again in 1 Kings:
Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods. They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee. (Exodus 23:32-33)
And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods. (Exodus 34:16)
When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them: Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly. But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire. For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth. (Deuteronomy 7:1-6)
But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father. For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as did David his father. Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods. And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice, And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which the LORD commanded. Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant. (1 Kings 11:1-11)
As we can see from reading the above passages, God commanded the sons of Israel to not go in unto strange women who knew not God, for they would surely turn the Israelites to other gods and, thereby, cause them to commit blasphemy and sacrilege against the Most High. In other words, Israel would turn to exactly the extreme sort of evil that we likewise got a perfect picture of in Genesis 6, when godly men went in unto the daughters of ungodly men, and it repented God that He had made man.
In summary, the sword of the Spirit — that is, the ever-unchanging Word of God — has eternally killed off the giant false doctrine of the mystical “Nephilim†hybrid race that apparently a great many professing “Christiansâ€, even of the “Bible-believing†sort, love to lay up in the foolish imaginations of their own wicked hearts. As for those non-canonical books which folk like to cite, we can see within the accepted canon, as demonstrated throughout this post, that this doctrine is entirely false; therefore, it calls into even greater question the legitimacy of the non-canonical books that suggest otherwise.
On a final related note, the fetishization of all things Hebrew — in this case retaining the word nephilim in favor of the English word giant — adds additional intrigue to help attract those with itching ears which are ever-receptive to hearing some new doctrine to whet their thirst for something new. But for those who are wise to the modus operandi of the synagogue of Satan (Revelation 2:9; 3:9; John 8:44) it should immediately raise yet one more red flag that something is askew, and encourage us to seek God’s face in prayer and to ask that His holy Spirit leads us to the truth, devoid of any and all mystical embellishments.
Discipleship Tip
Lay Verse 27, below, about the Holy Spirit to heart, and never forget it. I’ve also included Verse 26 for context concerning those that would seduce you into believing lies:
These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. (1 John 2:26-27) — Ideally, read the whole of 1 John 2.
Here’s another foundational layer of protection against believing the wicked false teachings of man:
It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. (Psalm 118:8)
Always!
Go direct, by abiding daily in God’s holy Word. It is only thus that we can put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-18), as protection from both friend who means well and foe who intends grievous harm.
